The Sideways Mosaic

Mosaic Number 2. The sideways Mosaic.

Time to make your second mosaic. This one makes a great decoration, and looks very rustic.

Materials Needed-

  • 1/2" - 3/4" Plywood

  • 1X2 Trim Pieces

  • Ceramic Tile of your choosing

  • Grout, Of what ever color you like

  • Wood Glue

  • Barbed Wire

  • A tin star of cross(or anything else you want as centerpiece)

  • Small, Finishing Nails

  • Paper Towels

  • Empty Coffee Can

  • Sponge

Tools Needed-

  • Jigsaw, or Wall saw

  • Midorsaw or Router(If no trim pieces were purchased)
  • Clamps if using router

  • Hammer

  • Measuring Tape

  • Pencil/Pen

  • T-Square(Or something else thats long and straight)
    Stain

  • Gloss(Optional)
  • Paintbrush

Directions-

Measure how big you want your new mosaic to be. The one shown above is 2ft long X 10" tall. Just remeber that you want your length to be about 2 times that of your heigth. (Just make sure your star is going to fit in the frame)

Cut that bad boy out on with your jig or wall saw.

Measure all the way around about 1/2 " from the edge, Mark it.

Clamp it down to a table, and router out to your half inch line that you marked.

Attach your rusty barb wire to the back of the frame, with nails or screws.

Lay your tile down how you want and glue it.

Grout it all up, same as before.

Lay centerpiece in wet grout.

Go ahead and stain while grout is still wet, Because if you get any stain in the grout, you can easily get it out with a butter knife.

Wait till it dries, and you can gloss if you would like.

Hang that beautiful piece of work up or wrap it up as a lovely present!

Basic Mosaics

Your first Mosaic!

Alright guys, I know your all Dying to make your first mosaic masterpiece!

Well in this blog, I'm going to give you a list of basic materials you need, as well as a set of directions to get you well on your way to making a beautiful piece of work.

Materials Needed-
  • 1/2" - 3/4" Plywood
  • 1X2 Trim Pieces
  • Ceramic Tile of your choosing
  • Grout, Of what ever color you like
  • Wood Glue
  • Bailing wire(Or something that can be used as hanger)
  • A tin star of cross(or anything else you want as centerpiece)
  • Small, Finishing Nails
  • Paper Towels
  • Empty Coffee Can
  • Sponge

Tools Needed-

  • Jigsaw, or Wall saw
  • Midorsaw or Router(If no trim pieces were purchased)
  • Hammer
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil/Pen
  • T-Square(Or something else thats long and straight)
  • Stain
  • Gloss(Optional)

Directions

Measure out how big you want your Mosaic to be. A good starting one is one that is 12" in width by 16" in Height. Measure to 12" about 3 times down your plywood, putting tick marks each time, Get your T-square and make a straight line across those ticks. Do same for the 16" side.

You should now have a Nice big square on your piece of wood. Now Drag that big ole' heavy piece of ply to your "cutting board" Cut that piece out. (Lot faster with wall saw, and you can cut out 3 at a time, but a jig is fine.)
Go over to you Midor saw, and out of the 1X2, cut 2 pieces at 16" and another 2 at 12", go ahead and cut 45 degree angles in them all so that when you put them all together they make a box, Almost like a big wooden picture frame.

Now would be a good time to stain your frame. (Just makes your life a little easier to go ahead and do it now) Stain your 16"X12" plywood rectangle, as well. [A favorite stain of mine is Dark Walnut. ]

Time to nail that trim to your plywood! Just go ahead and put 2 in each piece of trim. Then turn your frame over, and put an additional 2 about 3-4 inches appart in the back, but DON'T nail them all the way in yet! Wrap your wire around them, about 5 inches should do, You want it to be kindof taunt. Hammer the nails in sideways so that they hold on to the wire better. (You may use screws if you prefer)

Figure out what you want you center piece to be in the mosaic and lay it in the frame, But dont glue yet... Now time to decide what kind of tile you want. Red white and blue, or a more rustic looking brown and white, Whatever you decide, It's up to you!

Break up the tile with the hammer, and lay it around your center piece, Make sure you like it before you glue. Give the tile the finishing arrangements, and go ahead and glue them in. BUT not the center piece!

Wait about a 30 min to an hour for glue to dry.

Get out your trusty grout mixin' can! Put around a half can of grout mix into said can. Add water SLOWLY and stir until it has the consistencey of pancake batter.

Take out your center piece and lay asside for a quick sec. Pull out the sponge and spread the grout over your tiles. Make sure you get all your spaces filled up. But hurry! Grout dries quickly. Wipe off excess grout off tiles, and put a big clump of it in the center of your frame, (Where your center piece will be going) Lay center piece on top of the big delicious clump of grout and mush down on it a little.

Finish cleaning up the tiles, nice and pretty, Let the grout dry, And Welll- Lahhh! One Beautiful Mosiac Has been completed! You can add gloss if you please! :)
